Moving to 1Password as Our Managed Password Manager

Moving to 1Password as Our Managed Password Manager

We’re moving from Bitstream Vault (Bitwarden) to 1Password as the managed password manager Bitstream provides to your organization. Access to Bitstream Vault will end on July 31st, 2026.

If you are interested in 1Password, submit a ticket to request access.

What to expect if you currently use Bitstream Vault

  1. You’ll get an email from 1Password. When Bitstream provisions your account, 1Password will send an activation email to your work address. The subject line is “Activate your 1Password account.”
  2. Set up your account. Setup takes about 10 minutes. Just follow the prompts. For a step-by-step walkthrough go to: Setting up Your 1Password Account.
  3. Save your Emergency Kit. Your Emergency Kit is generated during account activation and contains the Secret Key you’ll need to sign in on any new device. Save it somewhere outside your work computer; a printed copy is ideal.
  4. Migrate any items you keep in Bitstream Vault. Your shared and company vaults are being migrated to 1Password for you, so they’ll be waiting when you sign in. The one thing we cannot move for you is anything personal you’ve saved in your personal vault. Export those items and bring them into 1Password before July 31st, when Bitstream Vault will be retired. It’s a quick export-and-import with an easy guide here: Export from Bitwarden. We’re available to assist if needed.

Why we’re changing

  • Audit and compliance posture. 1Password is built around enterprise-grade control that align with the security and compliance expectations your organization is increasingly held to. This includes granular vault permissions, mandatory MFA, audit logging, and policy templates.
  • Managed service over self-hosting. Bitstream Vault is a self-hosted instance of Bitwarden. Moving to a vendor-managed service means fortified security, faster updates, better uptime, dedicated support, and less attack surface to maintain.
  • Better day-to-day experience. Stronger autofill, polished mobile apps, native browser extensions across every major browser, and an easier interface for sharing credentials with teammates.
