Using 1Password
After your account is set up and confirmed, you can use 1Password on every device you sign in to. This page points to 1Password’s official documentation for installing apps, signing in, and day-to-day usage. Bitstream-specific topics such as recovery and migration from Bitstream Vault are covered in their own sections below.
Sign in and install 1Password
You can use 1Password through any combination of:
- Web vault: Sign in at the address listed in your Emergency Kit. Bookmark it for later.
- Browser extension: Chrome, Firefox, Edge
- Desktop app: Mac, Windows
- Mobile app: iOS, Android
Use whichever you prefer; your vault stays in sync across every device.

1Password’s documentation covers the everyday workflows in detail. The most useful starting points:
- Saving and filling logins: Save logins to 1Password · Fill logins with autofill
- Generating strong passwords: Use the password generator
- Two-factor codes (TOTP): Store and fill one-time passwords
- Searching your vault: Find what you need in 1Password
Shared vaults
Shared vaults are how teammates access common credentials. From corporate accounts, vendor logins, OEM portals, and the like. Bitstream provisions shared-vault access based on your role; vaults you have access to appear automatically in your sidebar.
To request access to an additional vault, submit a ticket and mention which vault you need. We will then request approval if applicable.
Recovering your account
If you lose your Secret Key or get locked out of 1Password, you cannot self-recover. Recovery requires a Bitstream administrator to initiate. The process:
- Submit a ticket explaining that you have lost access to 1Password.
- A Bitstream admin starts the recovery flow, which sends a recovery email to your work address.
- You complete recovery from that email: set a new account password and save a new Emergency Kit, which contains a new Secret Key.
- The admin confirms the recovery in the admin console.
After recovering, store your new Emergency Kit somewhere safe. Recovery issues a fresh Secret Key, so any previously printed or saved copies of the old kit no longer apply.
Migrating from Bitstream Vault
If you still have credentials in Bitstream Vault (Bitwarden), migrate them before Bitstream Vault enters its read-only window. 1Password provides an official guide:
Export from BitwardenExport your Bitstream Vault as an encrypted JSON file; this format carries your TOTP codes across cleanly. Some item-type-specific fields and attachments may not transfer; review your items after import.
Personal vault items are your responsibility. Bitstream will be migrating shared and company vault data only. If you have personal credentials in Bitstream Vault, export them before it is decommissioned.
